Supermarket Champagne

This Champagne Day, it can’t always be about the super pricey, big names. Today, we’re singing the praises of the best bottles of own brand Champers from the supermarkets. These are the real deal from the Champagne region but won’t burnt too much of a hole in your pocket!

M&S Delacourt Champagne Medium Dry, £24, M&S link

Medium dry bubbles are having a moment as sippers rediscover this fabulously food friendly fizz style. Unlike Prosecco which can seem sugary, the tart acidity in Champers makes the extra sweetness simply taste fruity and, like this one, it’s a winner with salty snacks, hard cheeses and light pavlova style puds.  4/5

Les Pionniers Non Vintage Champagne, £22.75, Co-op link

Frequently cited as the best Non-Vintage Champers around for the price by experts, Co-op’s cracking Les Pionniers is still as good as it always has been. If you prefer a crisper, more red apple skin style to the heady, baked brioche versions, then this is for you. They have a fabulous posher vintage version too, which is still a steal at £30! 5/5

Montaudon Champagne AOP brut, Lidl £14.99, Lidl link

Chateau Monty was brought to us by Lidl to go head-to-head with Aldi’s house fizz and they’ve done a decent job. Much softer than many styles with simpler notes of baked apple and pastry, it’s a decent drop that’s seriously easy to drink. While it won’t hit the complex heights of some of its competition, it’s still a total bargain. 3/5

Sainsbury's Brut Non-Vintage Champagne, Taste the Difference, £22, Sainsburys  link

Sainsbury’s NV has always been a personal go-to of mine for parties as it’s reliable year after year and has a very classic Champagne profile. With a little apple skin, a little brioche, some riper fruit and enough tartness to let you know you’re drinking real champers, it’s a a solid choice, if not hugely exciting. 3/5

Veuve Monsigny Champagne Premier Cru Brut, £21.99, Aldi link

I’ve banged on so much about Aldi’s brilliant £14.99 Veuve Monsigny with its rich brioche and tasty apple tang, I thought I should shout about its trade up version. Still a total bargain, this Premier Cru is a huge step up the quality ladder with more savoury, smoky notes and a flinty tang. Properly posh without the premium price tag. 4/5

Tesco Finest Vintage Champagne Brut, £30 Tesco, link

Vintage wine in Champagne is a big deal and will always cost more than Non-Vintage (NV). if you’re after a big name, you will pay around double for something this good. With a crisp kind of purity, there’s so much flavour here but it’s all pretty subtle and elegant. A classy little number that’s perfect for kicking off a posh dinner party. 4/5

Morrisons The Best Brut Premier Cru Champagne, £23 Morrisons, link

Morrisons ’The Best’ range can be absolutely fabulous, but it can also occasionally miss the mark. For a posh, Premier Cru style, this is incredibly well-priced but when you taste it, you can sadly see why. Super lean and astringent, the acidity is a tad screechy here and there’s not much flavour on the palate bar some bitter smokiness. A real shame. 1/5

Louvel Fontaine Champagne Brut, £18 ASDA, link

ASDA’s Louvel might taste pretty simple, but it’s crisp and elegant with all elements in balance. A fun, frothy fizz that’s easy to drink and just about tastes like Champagne with a bit of apple here and a biscuit crumb there. For under £20, though you can’t ask for much more! Perfect for parties when you need a few bottles - and you won't feel bad using it for Bucks Fizz too!  2/5
